About Bosawás Biosphere Reserve

The Bosawás Biosphere Reserve, located in northern Nicaragua, spans over 20,000 square kilometers of dense tropical rainforest, making it the second largest rainforest in the Americas after the Amazon. Named after the main rivers Bocay, Saslaya, and Azul Meámbar that flow through the reserve, Bosawás is a critical ecological stronghold harboring an astonishing level of biodiversity, including countless endemic and endangered species. The reserve sits within the Central American Atlantic moist forests ecoregion and is characterized by highland cloud forests, lowland rainforests, rivers, and mountainous terrain. It serves as a crucial habitat for jaguars, tapirs, spider monkeys, harpy eagles, and many other wildlife. Bosawás is also home to several indigenous communities such as the Mayangna and Miskito peoples, whose traditional lifestyles and cultures remain deeply intertwined with the forest. Protected since 1997 under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme, the reserve offers unique opportunities for ecotourism, including guided hikes, bird watching, wildlife photography, and river expeditions. Due to its remoteness and limited infrastructure, excursions here are suited to experienced travelers and researchers seeking pristine wilderness and cultural encounters. Key landmarks include the Saslaya National Park core zone and the biosphere’s extensive river systems that challenge adventurers and support vibrant ecosystems. Bosawás’s unparalleled natural beauty and conservation importance make it a vital refuge for the region’s biodiversity and a testament to sustainable coexistence between humans and nature.
